Why Summer Camp Matters: Growth Beyond the Shore

July, 2026
For the residents and families of Projekti Shpresa, the annual summer camp in Velipojë is far more than a simple vacation; it is a vital psychological catalyst for social development. For many participants, the camp represents one of the few times in the year they step entirely outside their daily routines into a large-scale community setting. This transition from the familiar environment of our Shkodër family homes to the vibrant, high-energy atmosphere of the coast encourages "social stretching." In Velipojë, residents are immersed in a supportive network of over 400 people, including volunteers and peers from different backgrounds. This environment forces a healthy break from isolation, fostering a sense of belonging to a global family and significantly reducing the social anxiety that often accompanies intellectual and physical challenges.

The psychological impact of the camp is rooted in the concept of "intensive inclusion." Throughout the week, the structured activities—ranging from group sports to music and communal dining—require constant interpersonal interaction. This helps residents practice vital social skills such as cooperation, conflict resolution, and empathy in a real-world, dynamic setting. The joy of the seaside provides a natural "dopamine boost" that enhances emotional regulation and openness to new experiences. For our youth, the experience of being part of a 400-person group where they are seen, heard, and celebrated creates a powerful "success memory." This memory serves as a psychological anchor, proving to them that they can thrive in large social settings and navigate the complexities of community life with confidence.

Furthermore, the Velipojë camp plays a crucial role in developing personal autonomy. In the relaxed but organized camp environment, residents are encouraged to make choices about their participation and manage their own social interactions. This independence is supported by our multidisciplinary team of educators and psychologists, who use the camp setting to observe and guide residents in a less formal context than the center. The "freedom" of the camp allows residents to discover new aspects of their personalities—a hidden talent for dance, a flair for team leadership, or a newfound love for the sea. These discoveries are often brought back to Shkodër, where they are integrated into the resident’s long-term development plan, fueling further growth throughout the year.

Finally, the summer camp acts as a powerful restorative period for the families of our residents. By providing a safe, inclusive space for their loved ones, we offer parents and guardians a rare opportunity to share experiences with other families facing similar challenges. This collective solidarity strengthens the entire support network of Projekti Shpresa. When the week ends, participants return home with more than just a tan; they return with a strengthened sense of identity and a renewed belief in their social capabilities. At its core, the Velipojë camp is a laboratory of hope, proving every summer that with the right environment, the social potential of every individual is as vast as the sea itself.
