Accessible Tourism: Why Velipojë is the Heart of Our Inclusive Retreats

July, 2026
Selecting the right environment for an inclusive retreat is about more than just finding a beautiful view; it’s about finding a place where nature itself assists in the mission of accessibility and healing. At Projekti Shpresa, we have long recognized Velipojë as the perfect coastal partner for our residential programs in Shkodër. The primary reason lies in the geography of the coastline itself. Unlike many rugged or pebbled beaches across the Mediterranean, Velipojë is famous for its vast, shallow, and calm waters. This gentle gradient makes the sea uniquely accessible for individuals with limited mobility or sensory sensitivities. It allows our residents to experience the therapeutic power of the water in a safe, low-stress environment where they can build physical confidence at their own pace.

The "volcanic" sand of Velipojë also offers specific therapeutic benefits that align with our vocational and occupational therapy goals. Known locally for its high iodine and mineral content, the sand provides a natural form of "sand therapy" (psammotherapy) that has been used for generations to soothe joint pain and improve circulation—benefits that are particularly valuable for residents with physical disabilities. Beyond the medical aspect, the sheer scale of the 8km sandy beach provides the open space necessary to host our massive 400-person summer camps. This openness allows us to create specialized zones for sports, art workshops, and relaxation without the crowding and over-stimulation often found in more commercialized tourist hubs.

Furthermore, Velipojë is a leading example of the "Accessible Tourism" movement in Albania. Local authorities have increasingly prioritized the development of public beach spaces with inclusive infrastructure, such as ramps and accessible restroom facilities. This growing commitment to universal design allows our residents to feel like genuine participants in the local tourist scene rather than isolated visitors. By bringing our youth to Velipojë, we are not just taking them on a holiday; we are exercising their right to leisure in a public space. This visibility is a core component of our social integration strategy—demonstrating to other tourists and local businesses that people of all abilities belong in the heart of our most beautiful national landscapes.

Finally, the proximity of Velipojë to the Buna River Protected Landscape provides a serene, low-stimulus environment that supports psychological well-being. The lack of loud, urban noise and the presence of diverse flora and fauna offer a "nature-reset" that is essential for residents who may struggle with the sensory demands of city life. The calm atmosphere of the village allows our multidisciplinary team to lead reflection sessions and group activities in a state of true tranquility. For Projekti Shpresa, Velipojë is more than a destination; it is a laboratory for inclusion where the barriers of the city are washed away by the tide, leaving only a sense of shared humanity and hope.
