Creating a "Sense of Belonging": Designing Homes, Not Institutions

February, 2026
The physical environment of a residence profoundly impacts the mental health and self-worth of its inhabitants. At Projekti Shpresa, we believe that for a community home to truly feel like a "family home," it must move away from the sterile, uniform aesthetics of traditional institutions. Creating a sense of belonging starts with personalization—allowing residents to have a say in the decor of their private rooms and communal spaces. By incorporating warm lighting, soft textures, and vibrant colors instead of cold fluorescent lights and clinical white walls, we transform a building into a sanctuary. When a resident sees their own photos on the wall or chooses a bedspread that reflects their personality, they stop being a "visitor" and start being an "owner" of their space.

The layout of common areas is equally vital for fostering the social bonds that define a family. Our design philosophy prioritizes "connection points," such as large, circular dining tables and open living rooms that encourage eye contact and conversation. In our Shkodër residences, the kitchen is never a restricted zone; it is the heart of the home where residents, volunteers, and staff gather to prepare meals. By designing these spaces to be accessible and inviting, we naturally facilitate the "learning by doing" approach. An inclusive home design removes physical barriers to participation, ensuring that everyone, regardless of mobility, can contribute to the household's daily life and feel like a valued member of the group.

Beyond the interior walls, a sense of belonging is strengthened by how a home connects to its natural surroundings and the local community. Integrating "green corners" or accessible gardens—such as those used in our Garden Therapy—brings the calming influence of nature indoors. Large windows that look out onto the streets of Shkodër serve as a constant reminder that our residents are part of a wider neighborhood. This transparency reduces the feeling of isolation and encourages residents to engage with the world outside. A home that feels open to the community, yet secure and private for its residents, provides the perfect balance for long-term emotional stability and social growth.

Finally, the small details—the "scent of home"—are what truly complete the transition from facility to family. Whether it’s the aroma of a traditional Albanian dish cooking in the kitchen or the display of handmade crafts from our wood workshops on the shelves, these sensory cues build a shared history. We encourage the display of collective achievements, such as photos from our Velipojë summer camps or art from the "Beyond Borders" exhibition, to remind everyone of their shared journey. When the environment reflects the stories, efforts, and joys of those living within it, it ceases to be just a structure. It becomes a place of hope where every individual feels they truly belong.
